Is the Life of an Overseas English Teacher for Me?
There are many questions you will have to ask yourself before you decide if the life of an overseas English teacher is right for you. Undoubtedly the world is an amazing place with so much to see and many unique and exotic cultures and it is true that living overseas builds character, expands horizons and really allows you to discover many things about yourself that you might not otherwise know. Yet it isn't for everyone. Can you cope with a language barrier and in some cases being completely illiterate? Can you try new foods and invest the time to put yourself in the shoes of another cultural perspective? Is country life or city life better for you? Can you feel safe and cared for outside of your comfort zone? What countries interest you and what laws and customs there might conflict with your own? Can you be away from your family for a year?
These and other questions will be explored in the TEFL class, but we encourage you to think carefully and deliberately about what it means to live in another country. Once you sign a contract you are legally bound to honor it.
UEA believes that the experience of overseas living is one of the best educations there is. That your commitment to be the best teacher you can be will pay big rewards in both friendships and experiences that you invite into your life. Our TEFL class will equip you with everything you need to truly be an asset to your school and students.
Job descriptions and salary vary by country and assignment but range from USD$1500 to USD$3500 per month for a work load of between 25 and 35 teaching hours. Many companies pay a full month's salary bonus upon completion of contract and will pay for RT airfare. Many schools pay for or subsidize housing costs and some schools even offer cars, bicycles, free language lessons, insurance, excursions and paid vacations. Most teachers find they have ample free time, and are able to see much of the country or surrounding countries. Outside of the United States and especially in Asia teachers are still well respected and prestigious members of society.
You can be expected to be paid in the country's currency and if you live frugally can save money quite easily as most expenses save food are covered by the school. It is possible to teach at a Jr. or Sr. high school or a conversation school where students come in all age groups from 2 to 80. There are cram schools, Jr. Colleges, trade schools, technical schools and so on where English is taught.
Most schools are supportive, will help you get settled and the vast majority of people who spend a year or so overseas return with amazing memories, new confidence, and an experience that is prized by many prospective employers.
