"HAWAI'IANA LIVE!" - PALACE THEATER, HILO

Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater. Through traditional chant and storytelling, music, hula, and video featurettes, Leilehua explores different facets of Hawai'i Island. Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often appear. A few of the past guests are Mary Ann Lim, Keoki Kahumoku, Leina'ala Lassiter, Diana Aki, and Stan Kaina. Sometimes there is hula! The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic pipe organ, playing some of Hawai'i's most beloved melodies. Wednesday mornings, 11:00 to 11:45am, except Christmas and New Year weeks. HILO TO VOLCANO 50K ULTRA MARATHON AND RELAY
For those hearty runners who are looking to go a little longer than your typical 5K, the Big Island Road Runners present the Hilo to Volcano 31 mile (50K) Ultra Marathon and Relay. At 6 a.m., individual runners completing the entire distance will depart from Coconut Island in Hilo. At 6:30 a.m., the relay participants will start at the same location. The runners will travel from Coconut Island to the Cooper Center in Volcano. Each relay team will consist of 3 runners and all runners must provide their own support vehicles. 'IOLANI LUAHINE HULA FESTIVAL - KEAUHOU BEACH RESORT
A festival honoring Aunty 'Iolani Luahine, one of Hawai'is premiere performers and cultural treasures. The Festival will include a visit to 'Iolani's birthplace in Napo'op'o Village, hula workshops and presentations, and an educational "challenge" to Kumu Hula, with a prize for the one who best demonstrates the values of 'Iolani Luahine in regard to education and Hawaiian culture. ANNUAL WAIMEA CHERRY BLOSSOM HERITAGE FESTIVAL - WAIMEA
This year, the Festival marks its annual celebration with the planting of cherry tree seedlings gifted from the Embassy of Japan. The two varieties of seedlings to be planted in Hawai'i were specially chosen for Waimea's clime by Dr. Tetsuo Koyama, a Honolulu-based botanist formerly of The New York Botanical Garden. the festival showcases the 60 year old cherry trees planted at Church Row Park and the Japanese tradition of viewing themÑhanami. The event includes a variety of activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at venues throughout Waimea - look for pink banners identifying site locations from the Parker Ranch Historic Homes on Mamalahoa Hwy. 190 to the Hawaiian Homestead FarmerÕs Market on Hwy. 19. Enjoy an all day lineup of Japanese and multi-cultural performing arts, plus hands-on demonstrations of bonsai, origami, traditional tea ceremony, and mochi pounding. There will be a host of colorful craft fairs, as well. This year, there will also be a Festival of Quilts display, featuring the handiwork of all six local quilt clubs. Haili Christian School is hosting its first Ho'olaule'a to raise money for their scholarship fund. To be held the day before the Super Bowl, and featuring a "Super Bowl Steak Fry", along with lots of great food such as Hawaiian plate, malasadas, teri burgers, corn on the cob, our onolicious chili, shaved ice, and cotton candy. 15th ANNUAL BIG ISLAND INTERNATIONAL MARATHON - HILO

26.2 Mile Marathon, 10.8 Mile Run & 3.1 Mile Fitness Run/Walk. Run the coast of old Hawaii along the Pacific Ocean, through tropical rainforests, past exotic waterfalls, and along black lava beaches to finish at historic Hilo Bay Front. Run with elite runners in a small running field. Start to mile 10 is a net downhill of 500 ft. with some hills in the first 8 miles and then fairly flat after that. Hilo is located in one of the cooler lush areas of Hawaii, which translates into good running conditions. Enthusiastic volunteers cheer on the runners at well-stocked aid stations and at the finish line celebration. Time: 6am. 10.8 mile runners run the first 10.8 miles with the marathoners. LAVAMAN WAIKOLOA TRIATHLON FESTIVAL - WAIKOLOA BEACH RESORT
The 2nd Annual Lavaman 5K Sunset Fun Run will take place on Friday. THE 47th ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL - HILO
A week-long festival of cultural events including Hawaii's most prestigious hula competition at Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium. TORCH RUN FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS - KAILUA-KONA

The Hawaii Police Department and volunteers will carry the "Flame of Hope" through the streets of Kailua-Kona in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the athletes of Special Olympics West Hawaii. This event, known as the "Troy Barboza Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics" is a tradition in the law enforcement community around the world. The event begins at 8 a.m. at First Hawaiian Bank, Lanihau Center. The "Flame of Hope" will be carried along Aii drive and to Hale Halewai and end at The Club in Kona, where the Special Olympics West Hawaii Powerlifting Tournament will be held after the run, at 10am, and its scores will be used to determine seeding at the State Summer Special Olympic Games on O'ahu in late May. THE ART & TRADITIONS OF HULA AT KILAUEA - HAWAI'I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

This Volcano Arts Center program features a Hula Kahiko "informance" with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 45-minute narrated demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant will be presented at the hula platform in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, followed by 45 minute lessons in lei making at 12 pm and 'ukulele playing at 1:30 pm (bring your 'ukulele if you have one) at VAC. Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater. PU'UHONUA O HONAUNAU NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK ANNUAL CULTURAL FESTIVAL

The Cultural Festival takes visitors back to the old Hawai'i of the 1800's. Practitioners in traditional dress will provide visitors with a uniquely Hawaiian experience, honoring the culture and traditions of the Hawaiian people.
